First Pictures Of Earth From Space Taken
The first ever pictures of earth taken from a US unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6 later released to the worlds press by NASA in September, It was Mexico, captured by Explorer 6 as it raced westward over the earth at speeds in excess of 20,000 miles an hour








Dalai Lama
After the Chinese invasion and control of Tibet , Tibetan rebels revolt against the Chinese control by surrounding the summer palave of the Dalai Lama . The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, crossed the border into India after a 15 day journey on foot from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, over the Himalayan mountains seeking asylum. This follows the Chinese repression of the rebellion by Tibetans in Lhasa. The Dalai Lama, is granted political asylum in India.

The Barbie Doll was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler, who was one of the founders of the Mattel Company. Barbie was named after Ruth’s daughter. Later on, when the Ken doll was made, it was named after Ruth’s son.

Austin Mini 7 Goes On Sale in England
The first "Austin Mini 7" called an Austin Seven from the British Motor Corporation goes on sale for £500 ( $1,000 ) making it one of the cheapest saloon cars available in answer to the fuel shortage and petrol rationing caused by the Suez Canal crisis in 1956. The car had a four-cylinder water-cooled transverse mounted 850 cc engine, four speed gearbox and front wheel drive, because of the design and suspension the ride was hard but the handling was legendary for a cheap non - sports car.
The name Mini was not used on the cars until 1962 as the press and the public had already renamed the car.
The most popular British-made car ever gained ( 5.4 million sold )in popularity as it was featured in movies, driven by trendy pop stars and movie celebrities and had considerable success as a rally car.








The Galapagos Islands
In 1959 The Ecuadorian government declared 97.5% of the archipelago's ( The Galapagos Islands ) land area a national park, and in 1986 the surrounding 70,000 square kilometres (43,496 sq mi.) of ocean was declared a marine reserve and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Galapagos Islands are famed for their vast number of species of animals that only exist on the Galapagos Islands and was the ideal location for studies by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle that contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

St. Lawrence Seaway Opens
The St. Lawrence Seaway has it's official opening when the Royal Yacht Britannia with The Queen representing Canada and US President Dwight D Eisenhower from the United States formally open The St. Lawrence Seaway, creating a navigational channel from the Atlantic Ocean to all the Great Lakes. The seaway, made up of a system of canals, locks, and dredged waterways, extends a distance of nearly 2,500 miles, from the Atlantic Ocean through the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Duluth, Minnesota, on Lake Superior.

Fidel Castro Sworn In
Fidel Castro had been sworn in as prime minister. He had won this seat by leading a guerrilla campaign that resulted in the exile of Fulgencio Batista. A couple of years after Castro became leader of Cuba, the United States withdrew all diplomatic personnel. Castro was advocating strong Anti-American beliefs.

Federal Agents carried out a series of raids across the nation as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal lotteries and gambling . The raids were carried out on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for tax dodging , most of the illegal gambling is controlled or run by mobsters.








Buddy Holly Dies
Rock 'n' Roll singers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash today along with the pilot when their chartered plane went down near Mason City, Iowa.







Southend Pier Fire
The Pavilion at the end of the world's longest pleasure pier at Southend on Sea is gutted by the fire and three hundred people are rescued by sea. The original Southend Pier was first opened in 1830 and is 1 1/2 miles long. ( The Pier was rebuilt and the Pavilion was turned into a bowling alley but the pier has continued to be affected by fires but rebuilt and still in existence today as a major tourist attraction )






Hudson and Nash cars
Hudson and Nash, two different car companies, become one on this day. They have become the AMC (American Motors Association).
